HISTORY

Campbell & Strasser began more than three decades ago when former Bethlehem Steel engineer Marion H. Campbell founded a cabinetmaking enterprise. Marion’s woodworking experience began with summer employment during his years as an engineering student. He had a twelve-year engineering career that included design work for a fabricator of laminated timber, earning a master’s degree, engineering and field supervision for a fabricator and erector of major steel bridges, and becoming a registered professional engineer.

He started his own woodworking business, Marion H. Campbell Cabinetmakers, in 1976 when his employer, Bethlehem Steel, withdrew from the steel fabrication business. In 1988, an introduction from a friend established a connection with Traditional Line, Ltd., then a young construction firm specializing in the restoration of 19th Century residences in New York City. Since his initial project with them, the restoration of an apartment in the Dakota Building, the company has earned many loyal customers among architects, engineers, construction firms, and select private clients in need of fine architectural woodwork and cabinetry. Firms we have worked with include Robert A. M. Stern Architects, David Scott Parker Architects, Basil Walter Architects, Arthur Chabon Architect, and Jed Johnson Associates, Inc. Our work has been featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, The Old House Journal, Design NJ, and Town & Country.

Justin Strasser joined the firm in 2002. In 2007 the firm’s name was changed to Campbell & Strasser and Justin assumed the role of general manager. In 2009 the firm’s ownership was transferred from Marion to Justin. This arrangement has allowed Marion the enjoyment of semi-retirement while Justin and the rest of the Campbell & Strasser team to continue producing the same high-quality work our customers have come to expect.

LOCATION

The Campbell & Strasser workshop is located in Bath, Pennsylvania, a charming village nestled in a beautiful landscape of hills and valleys dotted with steepled churches, traditional family farms, and historic stone buildings. Established in 1728.

PROCESS

Our Method Assures Quality

Every project has its own special challenges. In addition to trained and experienced personnel and a well-equipped shop, Campbell & Strasser prides itself on a flexible but rigorous process that delivers work of exceptional quality in an organized and timely manner. Key aspects of this process are summarized below.

Bid & Proposal

Our quality assurance starts at the beginning when we prepare a thoughtful and comprehensive bid that realistically projects costs and timelines. Typically, we enter a project at the invitation of an architect, building contractor, or interior designer. We review their specifications and drawings with the practiced eye of the competent craftsman, ensuring the design will fit the space and function as required. If not, you can count on us to address any issues and offer solutions upfront, before they become problems that will impact your construction schedule or budget.

Design Services

Occasionally, we are asked to furnish design services as well. In that instance, we first draft a design proposal outlining the nature and extent of the project and requiring full prepayment for the design effort. This typically requires a site visit for a consultation and to take measurements and the preparation of design drawings for the woodworking required. These drawings will be submitted for your review, approval, and sign-off. Once these drawings are approved, we will prepare a detailed proposal for shop work.

Shop Drawings

Accurate measurements and good shop drawings are the foundation of a successful woodworking project. We visit your site to take measurements and our shop drawings are always prepared in-house. We especially pride ourselves on our drawings. They aid the architect and builder in oversight and coordination, assure neat and accurate workmanship in the shop as well as facilitate installation.

Material Selection

Careful selection of materials for appearance and suitability is of the utmost importance. We take pride in our skillful grain selection and placement. Our decades of hands-on expertise in this business means we have excellent contacts for rare and exceptional materials. Our approach is educated, combining an appreciation for traditional materials with respect for the superior stability of modern materials. We can advise you on materials, new and old, that will best suit your project needs and purpose, and suggest ways in which new, engineered materials can be incorporated into traditional building styles for added longevity.

Fabrication

In addition to ordering and selecting materials for suitability and appearance, fabrication entails obtaining any necessary tooling for special molding profiles, coordinating personnel and equipment, and ongoing oversight of production. Our workmanship equals or exceeds exacting standards established by the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), the leading architectural woodworking certification body, in its nationally recognized specification, AWI Quality Standards.

Finishing

To reduce the time and expense of finishing once your millwork or custom cabinetry is installed, we will contact your finisher for instructions on proper preparation, including sanding and priming, so that you can be sure of the most satisfactory and speediest finishing results. Occasionally, we are asked to undertake shop finishing, and we have skilled specialists in place to accomplish this.

Shipping & Installation

We plan shipments with care to ensure your project arrives looking just as good as it did when it left the workshop. We will package your pieces ourselves, custom creating a crate if necessary. Typically orders are delivered in a dedicated vehicle.

To reduce installation time, you will get a detailed packing list, assembly instructions, and a fresh set of shop drawings illustrating how all of the sub-assemblies and parts fit together. (Don’t be surprised if your installer tells you they practically put themselves together!)
